Those of you who’ve written novels, or at least made a start, what is your first step? Do you outline, do you just start and let it take you where it will, or is there some other method you use?
Let’s say you have a fairly firm grasp on main characters, you know the type of novel (we’ll say a road trip), and you’ve roughly decided on Point A and Point Z, but the points in between you’re not so clear about. Do you decide the in-between while you’re writing, or must you have some idea where those exits are along the road?
I also find it baffling how you revise with so much material, how you keep it all straight in your head when you’re dealing with so many little details you could so easily confuse. I guess that’s what volunteer readers do, though. And editors.
It’s all just an intimidating process. Those of you who’ve finished at least a draft I’m in awe of you!
