Own own high school student member Aimee spoke passionately against the proposed cuts to District 300 education at the big meeting last week. My family and I were there, and I took video on my iPhone that I posted on YouTube, then on my blog. It was a mad house, all in support of the teachers and programs the district plans to cut, which is basically every elective.
So many kids won’t be able to major in things like culinary studies now, because there are no teachers to teach these courses. And the Advance classes, of which two of my kids are in, will probably be cut, too.
School days may be shortened, and credits required to graduate dropped below the state requirement.
One of the board members walked out on the meeting for a while, too. And my family was briefly on TV while WGN filmed the idiot leaving!
Seems it was all fruitless, as the board voted to pass the cuts, but if the teacher’s union will agree to take a 5% pay cut the district will supposedly hire back about half the teachers.
But Aimee, I was proud to see you step up and have your say.
P.S.: My daughter’s in Jacobs, and she knows you – or at least who you are. She’s in drama club. Her name is Allison Guidarini. My son Adam’s also in drama club.
